Coco Coqueto: Superb Latin Food

Restaurant Name: Coco Coqueto
I selected "Mexican" as the type of restaurant but that's really too simplistic. Coco Coqueto offers a variety of Latin American cuisine. Run by a Latin American family, the ambience is superb and the food is even better! Surprisingly the prices were very reasonable.
Favorite Dish: Everything we tried was fantastic! Here's a prominent review they received from the Toronto Star.

Jardin Nelson: Time to only visit one restaurant in Montreal?

Restaurant Name: Le Jardin Nelson
Le Jardin Nelson is the place I first take all my visitors to in Montreal. Be sure to walk to the back courtyard. There you'll find the most wonderful ambience, open to the skies above, albeit covered in large umbrellas. Their speciality are crepes but not just of the sweet variety. You won't be disappointed!
Favorite Dish: My favourite crepes are the Florentine (spinach) and Newburg (seafood). I also love the spinach salad with strawberries and a light maple dressing.

Restaurant Name: St. Viateur's Bagels
For the best bagels in Montreal - some people say the world! - I recommend you go to du Parc and St. Viateur (south of Bernard and north or Laurier). Walk 1/2 block east and you'll find St. Viateur's bagels. Fresh, delicious, and ohhh so wonderful!
Favorite Dish: As an aside, I have an ongoing "debate" with one Peter Franklin, a famous taxi driver in New York City [www.gabby.com] about bagels. Even hinting to him that Montreal bagels might be superior to those found in NYC is sacrilege! If you happen to be going to New York right after Montreal then do me a favour and bring half a dozen bagels down to Peter and take one of his excellent tours!!

Hotel de la Montagne: A drink on Top of Montreal

Restaurant Name: Hotel de la Montagne
Between mid-May and early-September the Magnetic Terrasse is open at the top of the hotel (take the elevator up to the 20th floor). Go there on a warm evening and have a drink overlooking downtown Montreal. Magical!

Restaurant Name: Le Faubourg
Le Faubourg is a chic marketplace offering all kinds of gourmet food stores on the ground level and then dozens of restaurants and other shops up above. I have eaten from several of the food vendors and particularly like these cuisines: Vietnamese, Lebanese, and Greek.

Lesters Deli: Great Montreal Smoked Meat!

Restaurant Name: Lesters Deli
Montreal is famous for its smoked meat. Most people would say that Schwartz's is the best place to go. Truth is, the smoked meat from many of the delis comes from the same place. Lesters is particularly good because they have a large wholesale operation and so have a rapid turnover of product - ie. it's fresh! From their website you even get the smoked meat shipped anywhere in Canada of the U.S.
Favorite Dish: I love the smoked meat, of course, but I also enjoy their hot dogs and hamburgers.

Maiko Sushi: Great Sushi in Outremont!

Restaurant Name: Maiko Sushi
Being from Vancouver (which many consider to be the sushi capital of North America), I think I'm a pretty good judge of this Japanese specialty. The ambience and decor here is magnificent. The sushi is very fresh and tasty, comparing extremely well with anything I've ever had in Vancouver! The service seemed a little lax, with the waiters somewhat unattentive except when they're at your table. A great place for a meal with friends or a romantic dinner.

BeatChick Mon May 19, 2008 00:45 UTC That "expansive set of interconnected shopping malls" sorta reminds me of Chicago!
