Getting TO/AROUND: Renting a bicycle is a wonderful way to see Central Park. There are at least two places where you can rent a bike. The website of one is shown below. We rented from a fellow who is setup right beside The Boathouse. The cost was only $9 for the first hour and $5 for each hour after that. An absolutely splendid way to enjoy the afternoon!

Getting TO/AROUND: My third time to NYC I decided to actually drive into the city. It was a lot less intimidating than I had feared! There are two tunnels connecting Manhattan with New Jersey, the Holland Tunnel and the Lincoln Tunnel. The Lincoln Tunnel is the northernmost of the two. The cost was $6 to get into Manhattan and no charge to head to New Jersey

Getting TO/AROUND: Grand Central Terminal (GCT) is indeed very grand! It, and nearby Penn Station, are the main access points for all trains to/from NYC. GCT offers a host of shops, restaurants, and other services. A wonderful place to visit, even if you're not taking a train!

Getting TO/AROUND: David Letterman has a joke that none of the taxi drivers in NYC speak English. If you want an English-speaking cabbie then you need to go to Baghdad! While this is not strictly true, you indeed may find it difficult at times to communicate with some drivers. Such is the luck of the draw when dealing with one of the 12,053 taxis in New York! All in all, I've found most of them to be courteous. Notice I didn't add the word "safe"! Though such "creative driving styles" can work in your favour. One time I was going to be late catching a train from Penn Station. So I asked the driver to see what he could do about getting me there quickly ... and he obliged! My stomach has never forgiven me but I did catch my train! I've provided a link to the website of Peter Franklin, who is perhaps the most famous taxi driver in NYC next to Robert DeNiro. :-)

Getting TO/AROUND: There's an excellent bus service between JFK and La Guardia airports and Manhattan. There are several pickup points including Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station. Prices are quite reasonable and there are significant discounts for seniors and students.

VZ-Pam Tue Feb 17, 2009 02:32 UTC Thanks ! Loved "seeing" your lovely Mom again. Your love of architecture is obvious and your humor shines through. Enjoyable, educational, and entertaining. | mollymoo0oo0 Wed May 2, 2007 15:36 UTC Hi, I love your psychadelic Empire State photo :) NYC is great, isn't it? So right about the queues at Empire State too... but worth it for the view I think!! Have a great week, molly.x |
