Abou Bakr, head of the Almoravids, undertook the construction of a kasbah, nicknamed the "stone castle" only yards away from the present site of the Koutoubia. You can still see some ruins of the old "stone castle" nearby on the minaret area.

Jamaâ El Fna, the beacon city of the Almoravids was founded in about 1070 with a view to controlling traffic from the nearby Atlas. This is one of my favorite things to see in town. Its just amazing how you can combine music with food, orange juice, dryed fruits, snakes, monkeys, donkeys, acrobats, dentists, etc.

This mosque was first built in 1147, and demolished right after because it was not correctly aligned with Mecca, the Holy City, the "mosque of the booksellers", Kitab stands for book in Arabic, was finished in its present construction in 1199. The mosque which it is attached is already big, but this minaret is one of the biggest in Africa.

This is another view of the Koutoubia Minaret in Marrakesh. The sound of the speakers when the prayer time comes is the most powerful in the city and can be heard a few districts distance from its present location. This view of the Minaret if from the main square Jma Al-Fna.

The Koutoubia was made with Almohad construction style, with a slightly decoration of simple Andalucian elements. The minaret rises 77 metres above the ground. While it has a strict appearance in red stone today, it some people say that originally was covered with plaster.

View of The Koutoubia from the gardens in La Menara. This is the big Avenue that connects La Menara with the cities wall entrance heading to Koutoubia. The minaret rises 77 metres above the ground. Its incredible how far you can actually see this mosque tower, this Avenue is pretty big, and still the tower can be seen and still have imponence.

You'll get mad ans spend all you money in just a few hours in cheap things. this is a must in town, you just have to loose a couple of hours each day walking on the streets full of people, street vendors, shops, artisnas workshops, etc. On the picture you have the streets where vendors sell metal objects like lamps.

Since youre not a muslim (I presume), you cant go in. but you can look from the oputside. There are a very large amount of mosques inside the Souq in the old medina. Each of the doors have different decoration and forms which are amazing and give the sense of beauty craftmen around here have.
