  • The Arabic word "Islam" means the submission or surrender of one's will to the only true god worthy of worship "Allah" and anyone who does so is termed a "Muslim", The word also implies "peace" which is the natural consequence of total submission to the will of Allah.
Islam is the religion which was given to Adam, the first man and the first prophet of Allah.

Islam in Mauritania (and i remember you its real name as country: Islamic Republic of Mauritania) is very very strong.

  • Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, complaining with the incurable longlasting headaches calls for a doctor. The doctors of that time couldn't find a remedy for the treatment of the illness.
One day a young man came with a solution which was hard to believe. The solution was a soap-massage in a Turkish bath.
Complaining from body pains, long lasting headaches, giving up excess body-weight, desire for feeling fresh and young addresses you to a "Hamam" where you feel like a new-born person.

  • Almost every street has a bakery. Mauritanians bread is not the best in the world but after a week it will defiantly be the best. Get some olive oil and do like locals do: bread and olive oil along with a cup of mint tea. A small bread like these ones on the photo usually costs around 25UM. You can get half in groceries stores for 10UM.

  • Children will come at you asking for the common "cadeux". Many of the children now only see a tourist as a source of anything and total respect is lost in terms of human relations.

  • Mauritania has a large saltwater fishing potential, and the government has taken measures to protect its offshore fishing areas. In 1997 the country?s catch was 82,000 metric tons.

  • Over-fishing by foreign fleets has led to a sharp decline of fish catches in the rich Mauritanian waters. Some species, such as sawfish, have completely dissapeared, according to to an expert study by the UN environmental agency UNEP. Fisheries are Mauritania's main export earner.

This is the port where big foreign ships stay for a few days until the exact fish quantity is checked by the port authorities.

  • Near the frozen fish market. you can find a very interesting market used by fishermen to buy things they need to fish. Some groceries stores can also be found.
Here you can notice how fishermen live. You also have some houses inside. Some little tea houses also. This is a perfect place to see how senegalese fishermen life and socialize.
You will have everyone looking at you like someone that shoulnd be there. But actually you'll have that feeling all around Mauritania so...

  • Tea here in Mauritania is served 3 times. So prepare to drink 3 teas each time you drink one??! what? ha
They take a while to prepare the tea. It is server with foam on top and for that they have to make a sequence of movments passing the tea from one cup to another. Its like cappucino. ;o)

Interesting place -- have stayed there twice -- both times in a "room". They don't improve. Nice enough people. Chance to meet other travellers and desert guides and change money.

A very captivating tale of your experiences in this OTBP location! The local customs and derelict ships along Cansado Bay were especially interesting. I can see why a spot this isolated might be of interest to certain 'organizations'!
