De vlaamse opera!: Opera. movie theatre, theatre and opera Review

If you like opera you might want to try to visit
the 'Vlaamse opera'. It is said that the Antwerp
opera brings high quality performances.
They got concerts : classical music with
great international know singers or the real
thing.

Now , I just enjoy it once in a while. I don't know
a thing about quality. But I love the atmosphere
in the Operahouse.


The Antwerp opera is often sold out...FAST.
But you can always give it a try. Just call the
reservation office and pick up the tickets .

Yes , it is also expensive..
Think about 70 euro for a nice seat ,
and 4 euro for a place where you can see nothing.
A little warning...they also charge you
administrative costs , even if you pick them up
yourself.

Dress Code:
Antwerp has a very nice opera house. It was
build turn of the century , beautiful balconies ,
such a nice ceiling.(enlarge the picture)

People really dress up to go to the opera.
That is not so in all the cities in Belgium..
If you like to wear those 1920's dress and pearls ,
go ahead. If your eyebrows are extravagant long ,
enjoy and fit in. If you love to wear moroccan
moccasins with silver on top and gold ,
feel free. And if you 80 and want to wear
pink mascara , that is just great.
But dress up a bit...and watch the people in
the bar in between chapters.

CAFE AU LAIT!: A nice mixture of people... Coctail bars and pubs Review

The owner of this place had a dream.
He wanted a place where 'Antwerpenaars' of different
backgrounds and countries were welcome.
Since Antwerpenaars of different backgrounds
don't know each other that well.

And he managed to accomplish that dream.
'Café au lait' has it's own atmosphere and
ambiance.

The interior is warm , decorated with african
masks , there is a cuddle corner and a dj brings
you in the richt mood if you want to go out
afterwards. The coctails are of superb quality...

Den boer van Tienen: Time stands still Old, brown, or historical pubs and taverns Review

This is the second oldest pub in Antwerp.
It has a large terrace that is very popular with
the locals and a veranda with a huge tv where
people gather together to watch footbal and
other events.

But it is especially the inside that is weird.
Time really passes by. Probably the only new
thing here is the expresso machine , they
serve excellent coffee. :-). The local visitors
that can be found here are also not really
living in this century. Just the perfect place to
watch people.

Have a look at the old floor , the wooden
panneling , the old chairs and tables...drink a
beer tapped from the barrel or order some
cheese as a snack....

RED and BLUE : A wild night out..but not for everybody... Night clubs Review

The red and blue is the most famous gay
danceclub in the wide wide area.

It is located in an old warehouse. Not a
concrete box , but a place with character and
histoy.

Saturday is gay night , meaning there
are no women allowed in the place. The only
women you will see have got an extra inch.

UGC: Movie theater.... movie theatre, theatre and opera Review

Antwerp used to be full of movie
theaters..Now there are only a few left.

UGC is is the largest city cinema
worldwide with 17 rooms.

A good location , some restaurants in the
neighbourhood and we don't like the movies
to be dubbed. We love them in their original
language...so if you like...

The hours when the movies start are a bit
unconventional...try to find out in advance.
(zone 03 is a good guide , or take the folder
in cafes and restaurants)

Cafe zeezicht...: The largest terrace in the city... Old, brown, or historical pubs and taverns Review

Dageraadplaats is the name of the
square where this caf? is located. Here you
are far from the busy 'grote markt'
and 'groenplaats' where the busses with
tourists are.

ZEEZICHT means 'view on the sea' I don't
know how they came up with this name..but
there is absolutely no sea in the area. In
summertime and even when the last
glimpses of sunshine visit Antwerp you can
see a sea of people enjoying the terrace- the
largest in town I think.

The audience is a nice mixture of colors ,
ages and...a laid-back atmosphere.
Inside sit on the old tables and wooden
benches , wooden floors ....

Try the beer of the month , drink a genever
with passionfruit filled till the edge...

O and if you see somebody with a large
hippo , teddy , duck , ...it means the restaurant
upstairs is full (again) and they are waiting to
be picked up.

This street used to be full of gay bars... and is
still more known by the 'Antwerpenaars' as
the rue Vaseline.

By gays it was know as the 'going out' spot in
Belgium , but also for its hard social habbits.

Nowadays the street has a sad
appearance with lots of empty houses , a sex-
shop and the last remains from what used to
be a vibrant street.

Gay night life has spread all over the city ,
became more divers.... Antwerp is a very
popular going out spot in Belgium.

De caveau: Stylish and unforced movie theatre, theatre and opera Review

This place is closed for now...bankrupt. Quit sure it will ope again soon. For now it is only open an hour before and after a play in the opera and only for people with a ticket.

Since 1907 this is the café of the flemish
opera. It is quit large and unique in Antwerp
and people still come here before and after a play.

Time has stood still in this place. Just like a
hunderd years ago marble pillars support the
spacious arches. Soft music on the
background...In the middle of each vault the
God Dyonisos keeps an eye on you.

Often visited by people alone who want to
read - because you got a lot of privacy around
here...and you can still feel the vibrant city
outside.

Dress Code: On the evening of an opera you will feel
more comfartable when dressed up a bit...

On a lazy afternoon...who cares.

Het misverstand.: Dinner café... restaurants with life music or performance Review

This is a small café near a square. In
summertime a nice terrace is added and the
kids can play and climb in the play yard.

Nothing really special...just a cosy place.

But every saturday you can enjoy live Jazz
music....please be in time starts at 22h

Everybody knows to find broadway
when travelling to New York...no?

Well I've got some stunning figures for you.

In ANTWERP every year there are about 90
theater companies active.Together they play
an amazing more then 1500 plays.
And that are more then 180 different pieces.

What about that?

I'm afraid that most of them are in Dutch and
not that accesable for foreigners. But often
plays are dance performances or without
words.

We got a sort of theater district. Within
walking distance from the theaterplein
(what's in a name) 7 large theaters are
situated.

Please check the calendar , ask vt'rs if you
are interested in one thing or another.

FROE FROE. They travel with their plays
around the country. Most plays are
interactive , people , video , puppet
performances and are quit amazing. For big
and little children.
