Rijstpap
Mariekerkse Jol is also the name for the desserts
served in some restaurants.
Not to be missed if you ask me...
It is just rice milc but tasted slightly different.
What was that misterious ingredient?
Could you tell me?
(EN ZOLANG ALS DE LEPEL in de rijstpap staat,
dan treuren wij nog niet (enz)
MIE KATOEN KOM MORGENNOEN
wij zullen een pintje drinken,
Mie katoen kom morgennoen,
wij zullen een pintje doen.
ZET HET GLAASJE aan de lippen,
laat het zoetjes binnenglippen,
Zet het glaasje aan de mond
en drink het uit tot op de grond.)
An old flemish song , saying ,
As long as the spoon is standing in the rice milc ,
then we don't go home , not for a long time.
lol lol .
In general if people come to here it is
because a certain event , like the 'palingfestival'.
But it is also a popular destination
for biking and walking.
No wonder , this is a silent and beautifull
corner of flanders. There is still some
nature to explore....
Afterwards they enjoy a nice dinner in one of
few local restaurants , serving?????
Address : you wont find any adresses in the
tips. Why? Well , the nice side of Mariekerke
is in general one street that runs to the
river Schelde , that is also where the church is
located. Near that place the ferryman is
waiting for you and from there you can make
nice walks.
Ferryman can I cross the river , yes or no...?
Used to be a popular game by children.
The ferryman in the middle of the playground
imagined a manner to cross to the other side
behind a line. Something like on one leg it is
allowed... if you didn't succeed the mission
you got tapped and you were supposed
to help the ferryman.
Why am I telling all this?
Well probably the nicest attraction in
Mariekerke near Bornem is the pond.
Every hour on the hour and on each half hour
a pond brings you to the other side...
from 1 april till 30 september from 8 till 20h
during wintertime ferryman goes home 2
hours earlier.-
Take your bike with you...
I bet the children got loads of fun.
Directions: In front of the church...
Phone: 03 224 67 11
The 'Mariekerkse Jol' can still be admired
left of the church , facing the water.
He is named 'PETRUS' and a little bit hidden
in the reed'.
He is a traditional fishers boat registered
during the war. He sunk with three passengers
in 1942. This one is a reconstruction of
that boat.
Interesting is that a few local organisations
at least try to keep the memory of their rich
fisher past alive in a local museum.
Address: omgankstraat , 2880 Mariekerke
Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Ten-Hemel-Opgenomen-Kerk.
Djeezes , how can I translate that.
Our lady taken to heaven chuch - will come
somewhere near.
If you expected a church from round 1200
because of the history of this village , your
wrong. There is a reason for that. The old church
got bombed during world war one.
This is a neogothic church from 1925
only the tower was saved and is much older.
The foundation of that tower could go back
till the 12th century.
Have a look at the lurid shulls in front
of the side entrance.
Inside the chuch is somewhet different
because it's got a sober decorated wooden
ceiling , a bit like a reversed ship.
Address: Ommegangstraat
