Lima in a day

by laura4n8 - last update: Nov 23, 2004

Lima is lovely

The Park of Love in Miraflores district of Lima
Most U.S. airline flights to Lima arrive in the late evening and leave even later the next evening. So ... it gives a perfect opportunity to make a short trip! Here is what I did in my 25 hours in Lima (I will note that it was my second trip to the city) and maybe you can take some of the suggestions.
Rooftop view from El Faro Hostal

When you arrive

My flight arrived at the airport at 11 p.m. I had a friend pick me up from the airport (taxi are easy to get, too). The sea of people and name signs at the Lima airport is one of the most amazing sights of my life. I loved it both time I've been to the city. Once out of the airport we ...

1. Stopped by the hostel -- El Faro -- in the Miraflores district to freshen up.
2. Drove to Barranco. This is my favorite spot in Lima! It was once Lima's largest beach resort and is just so lovely! We walked around and got something to drink and enjoyed the sights. More on Barranco in my must-see tip.
3. Went to Miraflores and walked around the lighthouse (el faro -- see the connection to the hostel?) and the surrounding area.
4. Walked to my hostel and slept!
Summer in Lima draws lots of surfers!

When the sun rises

I was up and at 'em pretty early, even with my few hours of sleep so I got up and ...

1. Walked to the beach. The path to the beach is a little long. The hostel is a half block from the coast's cliff but you have to walk down to the shore.
2. Watched the families sit together on the rocky shore. It was a beautiful Sunday morning.
3. Walked around Miraflores' shopping district. You can buy all sorts of stuff.
4. Joined my friend as he went surfing. I was supposed to get a lesson but the Pacific Ocean's water was FREEZING and was completely crowded with other surfers. I had a great time just watching and soaking in the sun (which is very intense).
5. Read on the hostel's rooftop terrace.
6. Let the hotel staff make me dinner. I was one of only two guests and so they were excited to speak to someone and I was excited to practice my Spanish.
7. Toured Old Lima and the area's incredible architecture. All the hype over the baloncies and the governement building is definitely warranted.
8. Drove to the airport (in plenty of time)
9. Flew back to Atlanta.

Looks like you got a lot of bang for your 25 hour buck, Laura. We didn't spend much time in Lima, either.... but I enjoyed the short visit. Nice page and hello from Tallahassee.
