These are a few of my favourite things | locals are friendly but he was a bit stony faced |
Rome is one of my favourite Cities on Earth for many reasons.
Gastronomy, whether you enjoy a rustic, cheap and cheerful neighborhood Osteria with simply cooked seasonal and traditional dishes or fine dining with classic old school service this city has it all, and it tastes good!
Romance, the word must be derived from 'Rome'! Enjoying a jazz quintet and watching the sunset from Villa dei Medici gardens, sipping a Campari soda from one of the many rooftop bars and restaurants or strolling arm in arm through the streets and stumbling across a stunning square, fountain or church, Rome has the vibe and magic that makes love blossom and grow.
Art and History, it's everywhere! Nowhere in the world has so much history to see, walk through and connect to in such a personal manner. We all know about the Vatican, Collosseum and Trevi Fountain but to see and feel it personally is a totally mindblowing experience. Monuments in supermarkets! Ruins in nightclubs! How did they manage to keep this stuff around for so long?
La Dolce Vita. People watching, the river, cafe's in squares, Italian style, late dinners in Trastevere, Porta Portese market, these are a few of my favourite things. |
| | when to go Now that Jet2 fly to Rome from my local airport I can be an expert on 'when to visit Roma' by going every month of the year then making my decision. It is a good an excuse as any to visit one of my favourite cities more often and so far I have enjoyed trips in summer, autumn and christmas time but it seems pretty fab at any time of the year! Oh well I shall keep trying. June- I went for a week so was able to experience the City in a relaxed laid back way. There is a lot to see so a week enables you to do it the best way, on foot with plenty of stops for eating and drinking, a siesta, an early evening stroll around another interesting area or an open air concert or light opera recital in a church followed by dinner and digestif in a piazza bar. Hot weather and plenty of music concerts to go to. September- It rained all weekend. A bit of a drag as we missed the street atmosphere we enjoy so much. A good chance to visit churches, galleries, crypts and Vatican Cities! November- The weather was sunny and very mild and we had a little clubbing and eating weekend. Christmas- enchanting and gorgeous. A stroll around a deserted and silent Collosseum on Christmas Eve after dinner was a treat. On Christmas day the streets are busy with people and stalls with Italian Chrismassy things in the squares, lovely. The weather was mild and sunny. Lots of restaurants are open on Chrismas day but most close on Christmas Eve (Italians have their main festive family dinner on this night) so you need to sort yourself out beforehand. read my Christmas romeblog on http://www.salvos.co.uk/diary/blog/index.php?show=0,12,2006 |
