Restaurant Name: Marie's Pub

The best bar in Serrakunda, for our money, run by the lovely Marie herself. Warm and welcoming, a good range of cold beers, including the “Crocodile” Julbrew Export. Cana, distilled palm wine and Casha Cana, from cashew is sold by the litre.

Favorite Dish: There’s a lady cooking deep fried savoury and sweet snacks right on the doorstep, which you can take inside and enjoy. She also serves up really massive meat rolls, for an impossibly low price!

Restaurant Name: Aisia Marie Cinema Restaurant

This place is a gem, opposite the Suma Hotel and used to supply Lana’s Bar, Serrakunda’s top tourist pub, with its food. It’s situated in the cinema’s forecourt, offering an inexpensive dish of the day during lunch hours. You can bring your own beer from the bottle shop just around the corner. Sayerr Jobe Avenue has many fine local restaurants at local prices

Favorite Dish: This cafe does a delicious takeaway fish and pasta supper, wrapped in foil. You can take it to your favourite pub or into the cinema!

Restaurant Name: Paradisso and homecooking

Kololi has a government-controlled restaurant on the road to the Monkey Park, with a good selection of local dishes. Paradisso Bar & Restaurant in Kololi is a very friendly, budget priced eatery with a large choice of dishes. The river camp we stayed at on our visit to Janjanbureh did us an excellent couple of meals, though be sure to wash your hands as cutlery is not always provided. We'd really recommend you buying some fresh local produce and sharing it with the locals, the Gambians are all good cooks. There could be a bit of a problem if you have a peanut allergy, domodah is the national dish!

Favorite Dish: Benachin has to be one of the best dishes, that's the spiced meat or fish and rice with tomato puree and vegetables. Ask for it as spicey as the locals eat it.
