WHY DHARAMSALA?

We must admit that we’d been resigned to the fact that China had taken control of Tibet and thought that nothing could be achieved by shouting at a super power. That was before we visited the Gelukpa Tibetan Cultural Society in Manali, last summer and had our minds changed. We were very upset by their photo gallery, with lists of atrocities committed against a very gentle people and touched by the lack of anger shown by the monks. We bought seventy prayer flags from their shop, which are now flying in our garden and visible to our main road, a symbol of solidarity from one small mountainous country, Wales, to a great mountainous country at the roof of the world. Now we believe that if each of us can stand up against brutality and do what we can, with what talents we are given, we might one day bring some justice to the Earth. At the very least we can set a good example to our children by donating some of our time to their cause. So we’re both working with the Lha Charitable Trust and living inside the Tibetan community, here in McLeodganj, Dharamsala, India. It’s our eighth time in this marvelous country and hats off to the government here, for supporting the Tibetan cause so generously for the last fifty years.

Below are links to two travelogues, our current unfinished chronicle of our stay in McLeod Ganj and a more amusing beer quest around Southern India, April 2008. When we can get access to our notes and photos, we must write up summer 2008’s journey to Ladakh, via Shimla and Manali. As we wrote this we still had over three weeks left on Tipa Road, before we headed back to Delhi. Now we've completed part four, which doesn't cover our goodbyes or the twelve hour, overnight bus back to the capital.
