"Ascension Island Diary" Ascension Island by IanS
Ascension Island Travel Guide: 14 reviews and 33 photos
As a member of the RAF I was posted to Ascension Island for a 6 months tour of duty in September 1985.
To be fair I spent a lot of time working, eating and sleeping but in between I managed to see all of the Island.
First impressions were not good. The island is dominated by a large runway built by the USAF. The island itself, in 1985, had a small USAF presence and a crew from the BBC who have a transmitter there. When I arrived, as part of the British Forces supporting the Falklands War, accommodation was primitive to say the least. Swooping in by Tristar all I could see was a black outcrop of rock and a tented village. Not at all promising!
