On Pulau Perhentian Kecil ("Kecil" = "small") there are two big beaches where you can stay and a few small ones with just one resort. The big ones are Coral Bay facing west and Long Beach on the other side of the island.
I've been on Perhentian twice - in October 2002 just before the start of the monsune and in early April 2003 after the rainy season was over. Both times I stayed on Long Beach - something like 800 meters of wide, white beach and some restaurants and places to stay ranging from cheap cottages to Bubu's with Aircon and all-day electricity.
The beach is very good for sun bathing, swimming and snorkeling - there's a beautyful coral reef at one end with an abundance of hard corals and fish.

Pulau Perhentian Kecil is a peaceful place and you can't do that much except enjoying the sun, the BBQ fish, snorkeling, and diving.
But don't wait too long to go there! Rumors will know that the island is about to be "developed" - establishment of a pier on long beach and new big resorts. Next thing they'll probably start flying charter tourists in from KL twice a day.
