"Grottes and Canyon de Saulges" Saulges by black_mimi99

Saulges Travel Guide: 3 reviews and 8 photos

This is unplan trip to come and visit this cave, just pass by Saulges from Laval to Sancerre and saw this cave, so we transit and wanna know more about this cave, but its bad luck that the cave was closing on Monday. So I just can see the canyon, and outside of the cave only.... too bad....

A unique prehistoric site. 100,000 years of human occupation.
A few hundred meters from the village of Saulges, a small town of great character, there opens up the canyon of Saulges, a valley of about 1.5 km notched by the river Erve. Travel to the time of Pre-history : one cave, two caves… there are in fact a score of caves open for viewing by visitors. The cave of Margot, the cave of Rochefort, the cave of the goat...,
and the decorated grotto of Mayenne-Sciences (cave closed to the public). The presence of these caves and rock shelters make Saulges an exceptional site, whose distinction is to have been occupied by humans since prehistoric times until today. From the first amateur nineteenth century archaeologists to scientists at CNRS today, the valley of Erve has always aroused interest and curiosity… and continues to reveal its secrets.
Until now, speleologists have checked out and explored 30 caves in this valley.
