Galang

Galang island is the sixth island in the Barelang ‘cluster’. It has already been six years ago that the former Vietname Refugees Camp (Camp Sinam) in Desa Sijatung, Kecamatan Galang, Kota Batam, was abandoned following the large scale repatriation by the refrugees on 2 September 1996. At that time, around 5,000 refugees who are known as boat people were repatriated to their country of origin, Vietnam.

Interesting island with a Vietnamese past. There was also an island off Terengganu which served as transit center for all Vietnamse boat refugees.
