  • The first time we arrived in Gambia, we were surprised by a very warm welcome at the Yundum International airport. A group young men and women were dancing in colourfull clothes at the platform at our arrival.

It was a wonderful start of our first one week stay in this country.

  • The beach area between Fajara and Kotu Point is very scenic, especially the surrounding area just behinbd the beach.

South of the Kotu beach this river streams into the ocean. The views at the river are very nice because of lots of green and palmtrees and the reflections in the water.

Things To Do: To Banjul, scenery Old Cape Road
  • Tip Rating:
  • We hired a moped and drove the Atlantic road passing Fajara and Bakau and took the old Cape road to Banjul.

The Cape Road is a small and quiet road along the coast. It has a fabulous scenery and ther are some wunderfull baobabs along the road.

Seeing baobabs is for me ...... being back in Africa !

  • Banjul is the capital of Gambia. Banjul is situated on the original St Mary Island in the Gambia river and can only be reached by crossing the Oyster Creek at the Danton bridge.

In Banjul we visited the National Museum.
In the museum you have a good overview of the development of Gambia with many old pictures and artifacts. To read all the descriptions will take some time. There is also a lot of information about the daily life of the different tribes and about the significance of music and dance for the gambian people.

After the visit to the museum we went to the Albert Market.

  • The famous and colourfull Albert market in Banjul is a real African market, a rich mixture of colours and flavours. You can buy here almost everything ... clothes, beads, tea, vegetables, fruit, medicines, herbs.

Artisan goods are sold at the Banjul Craft market, next to the Albert market. We bought here our second djembee.

    Things To Do: Banjul, downtown
  • Tip Rating:
  • Except the National Museum and the Albert Market there are hardly any other interesting places downtown.

The second time we visited Banjul we strolled around a bit in the towncentre, while waiting for the arranging of the insurance and other papers for the cars.

During the daytime the streets are lively with traffic, people, streetstalls, shops, but it is hard to find a place for a drink or meal. There are some restaurants and bars, but you have to know your way. In the evening there is not much to do.

Things To Do: Banjul, city park as central landmark

  • The central point of Banjul is the former Mac Cartney Square or nowadays called the July 22 Square. It is the public park of the city.
Recently the names of the streets in Banjul have been changed. Many people still use the old names. It can be confusing.

The Albert market is east of the central July 22 square. From this square the main streets run south to the southern end of the town and island. To the northwest the mainstreets run out of town in the direction of Serrekunda and the beach resorts.

Things To Do: Banjul, colonial architecture
  • Tip Rating:
  • Banjul has a mixture of old colonial buildings, modern office buildings and shantytowns. Most of the buildings don't have more than two storeys.

There is not only a mixture of architecture in the town, but you see also a mixture of people and cultures from all over the region. You will see women and men dressed in western style, but also in traditional style.

Except the different Gambian people, you will see also for example Tuareg and Berber people and some Lebanese shopowners.

Things To Do: Boattrip around the mangrove creeks
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the west side Banjul is surrounded by mangroves. From the Danton bridge it is possible to make boattrips in this ecological interesting area with a lot of small creeks and mangrove.

The boats will also go the the wide Gambia River. If you are lucky you can see dolphins in this river.

Things To Do: Serrekunda, wrestling arena
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wrestling is sport nr 1 in Gambia. It is one of the oldest sporting activities in the Gambia, dating back from before the 13th century.

In Serrekunda we visited the large arena, where wrestlers of different villages fighted their match with a lot of supporters and public.

All the wrestlers bring their own drumming group for support and to activate the public. Every village or group has its own traditional tune. This drumming and showing of the wrestlers is one of the nicest parts of the match.

For more pictures and information have a look at my sport tips.

Ali - you're truly blessed --- you also went to Gambia! Sigh, I can only dream...but maybe someday...dolphins in the Gambia River? Intersting. And the Wassu stones ---- like Stonehenge?

Looks a lot like some of the big cattle ranches I've been to in British Columbia, except for the climate. The famous Gang Ranch has more than 1,000,000 acres and 12,000 head.
