We visited Georgia and Armenia in 1986, still in the time of the USSR. We came to Georgia by plane from St Petersburg (Leningrad in those days) spent only a few days in Georgia and then travelled overland to Armenia. We stayed two nights in Tbilisi and visited Tbilisi and the ancient capital Mtskheta. Tbilisi in the Mtkvari River Valley looked oriental and lively in comparison with Leningrad, where we came from. We liked the atmosphere and the hospitable people. We were invited at the table of a Georgian family in our hotel and had a wonderful Gerogian night with wine, snacks, singing and dancing. |

Nemorino Sun Dec 21, 2008 20:41 UTC In the 1970s Tbilisi was the first "Soviet-block" city to have a partner city in what was then West Germany, namely Saarbrücken. This was quite a scandal in Germany at the time, though thirty years later it's hard to imagine what the fuss was all about. | Sue08080 Tue Jun 6, 2006 00:40 UTC Fascinating page. Thank you. I also enjoyed your photos of children around the world! | chewy3326 Mon Feb 20, 2006 18:29 UTC The architecture and the scenery in Georgia all seem very beautiful, Georgia looks like a wonderful place!
