Things To Do: Playa Pinguinos

The original zoo is in the middle of the citycentre of Emmen. In 2002 a second part of the zoo is opened at the edge of the centre. A huge pedestrian traverse connects the two parts through the centre of Emmen. In the new part of the zoo is the South American section. At the Playa Pinguinos you can walk between the pinguins, allthough they made a low fence later, because some of the pinguins liked to walk out of the zoo into the town of Emmen. You can also watch the swimming pinguins under water. In 2007 they started to make plans to move the whole zoo to this new part. The actual zoo in hte city centre will be transformed into a 'zoo for humans' to live in special houses still ahving the feel of the continents of the former zoo and to spend their leisure time.

The kantongerecht or district court is housed in one of the most old beautiful buildings in the centre of Emmen. It's an unique building with wonderful columns. It is built round 1855 by the two directors of the Oranjekanaalmaatschappij, inspired by their stay in Indonesia. The building was started as an house, later it was the office of the Oranjemaatschapij. In 1891 it became the postoffice of Emmen and in 1911 the district court moved in.

Drenthe is the province of hundebeds. You can find here 52 of the 54 hunebeds in the Netherlands. A hunebed is a megalithic skeleton of a burial chambers of 5.500 years old, made of huge boulders of around 25.000 Kg and in the past covered with earth. These boulders came to Drenthe from Scandinavia, transported by the ice-glaciers, in the ice-period of 200.000 years ago. The boulders were dragged to the burial place and piled up to rectangular graves. In Emmen are 10 hunebeds. The Long Grave is one of a kind in the Netherlands and can further only be found near Oldenburg in Germany.

The langgraf or ''long grave'' at the Schimmeres in Emmen is a very special hunebed. Two small burial chambers are embedded in an almost complete, partially restored ring of kerbstones of 40 M long. The north chamber has 3 capstones, 6 side- and 2 endstones. You can park your car nearby, but it is also a nice 10 minutes walk from the centre of Emmen. It's a peaceful place with huge oaks and a nice view at the open landscape. So have a sit on the bench to enjoy the view and the horses around.

|
Wthin the borders of the municipality of Emmen between the villages Zwartemeer and Weiteveen is a big Nature Reserve of moorland and peat swamp. The Bargerveen is the largest remain of the former Boertangermoeras, covering East-Drenthe, East Groningen and a part of Germany. It was originally 300.000 hectare with 160.000 hectare in the Netherlands. In the 19th century started the peat-digging. In 1968 the governement bought the first hectares. After the Purit factory stopped the peat-digging (for the production of norit) in 1995, the actual 2000 hectare Nature Reserve is completed. It is a nice area for walking and birdwatching. There are marked walking trails between the one and 7.5 KM in all the three parts of the Reserve, the Meerstalblok in the north, the Amsterdamse Veld in the middle and the Schoonebeker Veld in the south. For more information or excursions you can ask Staatsbosbeheer Zwartemeer (address and tel. see below)
