| Unguja Island, south coast |
Zanzibar lies in the Indan Ocean, 35 KM off the coast of mainland Tanzania. The archipelago of Zanzibar comprises the islands Unguja and Pemba and a number of smaller isles and coral atolls.
The biggest island of the archipelago is Unguja, also called Zanzibar island. At the island are many lovely beaches, palmtrees, but also the Jozani Forest and spice plantations. |
| | Zanzibar is a lot more than beaches and a tropical paradise. Zanzibar has a very turbulent history. Zanzibari culture is an unique African, Arabian, Indian and European mixture.
Because of this mixture Stone Town on the west coast of Unguja is one of the worlds most interesting cities. The labyrinth of alleyways, the mansions, palaces, markets and bazaars make the city a place for strolling around for days. |
We enjoyed our stay in this historically and culturally interesting island with its laid -back atmosphere. We stayed for 5 days in Stone Town in an Arab mansion at one of the alleyways. Using Stone Town as base, iIt's rather easy to visit other places on the island. | | |
