Kitale

by sachara - last update: Oct 26, 2004

Kitale is a regional town in the western highlands of Kenya. It;s a good base to visit Mount Elgon near the border with Uganda and the area north of Kitale with Pkot villages and the Saiwa Swamp National Park
Mount Elgon
In 1994 we visited Mount Elgon National Park about 26 KM west of Kitale. Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano of 4320 M high and extending in diameter a distance of 100 KM.
In 2004 we visited the area north of Kitale. Here you can find the traditional villages of the Pokot people.

It is amazing how Mount Elgon National Park campground looks almost like Scotland! The ceremony with the medicine man is impressive! I wonder if your Pokot woman with a calebas container might not have been churning butter?
