Also a piece of dutch history.....

How cruel history can be....

Elmina has a fort and a castle.
The St George's castle is built by the Portuguese in 1482 and captured by the Dutch in 1637. Till 1872 (then the english took over) the castle was the african headquarter of the Dutch West Indies Company. When the trade of slaves became more lucrative than gold, both castle and fort were expanded and transformed for the slave-trading. The Dutch have exported more than 65.000 slaves from here.
In the castle you can visit the former slave quarters, the dungeons and the quarters of the governor.
Like 9 years ago in the fort of Cape Coast I was impressed by the cruel history.

Nowadays Elmina is a lifely fishing-village, nice to stroll around and chat with Ghanaians, some with dutch names.

Yes, these old slave-trading ports do have a fascinating, if troubling, history. Great pics of both the Fort and harbour area!
