Kharga Oasis and theTemple of Hibis

by sachara - last update: Aug 15, 2003

temple of Hibis
The Kharga Oasis is one of the five oases in the Western or Libyan Desert. Kharga, a large oasis of 200 KM long and 30 KM wide, is the most developed oasis.
Al-Kharga the chief town of the oasis did not retain as much of the original character as the other oasis towns in Dakhla, Farafra, Bahariya and Siwa did.
Al-Kharga has modern buildings on wide boulevards. The development of Al-Kharga reflects the dreams of Egyptian planners from the 1960s, who shaped a new world of agri-business and mass population movement.

In the Kharga Oasis are some interesting ancient sites as the temple of Hibis, dedicated to the god Amun (600 BC) and the Necropolis of al-Bagawat ( 400 AD).
