One of the best things at sunset time is to look for a nice and peaceful place at the riverside.
The sunset at the Nile with a view at the islands or the westbank and some feluccas in front is wonderful.
back street souqs
One or two blocks from the Corniche el-Nil, are the picturesque backstreets and alleyways with souqs, markets and stalls.
In the 16 years between my first and last visit the atmosphere has not changed.
I can walk for hours in this area, to look at the lifely streetscenes, to see the colours, to smell the bakeries, spices and herbs.
And of course do some shopping, fresh bread, drinks and some old wooden decorated Nubian dishes.
With the a felucca we went to a Nubian village. In the village we visited a Nubian house. The mistress of the house showed us the yard, the kitchen and gave an explanation about their customs.
Afterwards we were invited for a nice glass of tea.
The felucca is the traditional sailing boat of the Nile. We made a very nice half day trip with a visit to a Nubian village.
While we were sailing, Mustapha, our sailor, climbed very easily and quickly to the top of the mast to fix something with the large sail. It was fascinating to see.
If you don't plan to make the trip with a felucca from Aswan to Luxor and just liked to go for a short trip, Aswan is the place. With all the islands the Nile in Aswan is the most scenic.
And if you're not on a felucca yourself, it's nice to look at all the sailing felucca's.
On the picture you see one of the most scenic parts of the Nile at the southern end of Elephantine.
On the picture you see also at the westbank the domed Mausoleum of Aga Khan, the 48th imam of the Ismaili sect, who died in 1957.
The guide explained us a lot about the remains. He showed us that the lower level of the building was made of stone and the upper level of mud-brick.
He was very proud to show us this beautifull mill-stone.

monastery of St Simeon
On the westbank of the Nile is Deir Amba Samaan, the coptic Monastery of St Simeon. This monastery from the 7th century is allready eight centuries unused, but good preserved. Because of lack of water the monastery was abandoned. Surrounded by high walls, it looks like a castle in the desert.
To reach the monastery you have to walk a few hundred meters into the desert. The location is superb with nice views.
Opening hours: from 9pm to 5am
Entrance fee: 12 Egyptian pound
Monastery of St Simeon
This monastery is one of the most beautifull Coptic Monastery remains.
The complex has a wall of 10M high and was built in two levels. You can stiil see the remains of a large basilica with colourful fresco's, further the cells for the monks, kitchen, bakery, stores, stables.
In the monastery was place for 300 monks and 100 pilgrims.

Elephantine, elephant look-a-like
The largest island near the centre of Aswan is Elephantine. The island was named Yebu, Elephantine after the huge grey granite boulders around the island, looking like big elephant bodies.
At the southern end of the island is the small Aswan Museum with antiquities from Aswan. Near the museum are also some remains of the temple dedicated to Khnum.
Khnum was the ram-headed god of the cataracts, who controlled the waterlevel.
In the northern part of the island is the fenced Oberoi Hotel.
In between are some Nubian villages.
Directions: In the Nile opposite the centre of Aswan.
The Kitchener island is named after Lord Kitchener, consul-general. When he received the island in 1890, he tranformed it into a beautifull botanic garden, importing plants all over the world. Nowadays it is still a very delightful place to visit and to walk around.
Entrance: 5 Egyptian pound.
Directions: West of Elephantine Island
