Red Town on the edge of the Great Erg

by sachara - last update: Jul 3, 2003

Timimoun is built in red-mud style.

It is a magical place with beautifull views at the sanddunes and the saltlake.

The people are very friendly and it is nice to walk around the town looking at the beautifull architecture, to visit the market and to make a tour to the small oasis villages in the desert.

Since 2003 Timimoun has changed a lot. Buildings are restored, streets are paved, became very lively. You can buy wonderful handicrafts and relax in a simple café, drinking the unique green mint tea. People are still very friendly and hospitable.

Such an off the beaten track place, enjoyed seeing the unusual architecture here, the irrigation at the palmery remind me of one I saw in Tunisia. Great little page (~_~)

Excellent page. The photo of a "comb" used to share the water is very good. I wondered if they were still in use. We had to go to Hotel Oasis Rouge as a wind sand made camping uncomfortable ! We ate sand stuffed artichokes and a so called cassoulet!
