Berlin Excursion

by Sol&Jo - last update: Aug 5, 2003

Day 9 - Guten Tag

Sol and I at the Berlin Wall
Greetings from Germany!

We finally arrived at the land of the divided nation. The weather is crappy with rain and gloom. The place doesn´t appear to be very cheery. People act so different here when compared to Amsterdam or Dublin.

More to report later....

Day 10 - The tour

What a great SUNNY day it is!

Joined the Insider Tour today... highly recommended if you don´t know the complete history of Berlin.

Highlights of some of the most memorable phrases and thoughts from the tour...

* "When they first burn books, they will soon burn people..."

* Frederiek the Great - Hilter´s greatest idol

* Over 20,000 books were burned that famous night in Bebelplatz. In honor of this, there is a white room with a look through glass in the middle of the square. When filled, it will fit 20,000 books

* The Soviet Army was the first to capture the red flag. Troops were actuallz fighting each other to be the 1st to capture that coveted prize. Shows the amount of hatreed and pride that was in taking over the Reichstag.

* Stood over the bunker where Hilter died.. felt no remorse.

* Pope´s Revenge - The TV tower hovering over Berlin was used to ´watch´over its citizens. The pope´s revenge came through the first light shinned on the building... the reflective material caused a cross to form on top of the building...

* "Time punishes those who wait..."

* "I am a jelly donut ..." JFK

After today, i have a greater respect for Berliner´s suffering.
