Off The Beaten Path: Paternoster Beaches
  • Tip Rating:
  • Paternoster is a small village up the west coast of the Cape. It is about an hour and a hlaf drive from Cape Town. The beaches here are practically deserted. There is a campsite at nearby Titties Baai.

Off The Beaten Path: Paternoster Cottages
  • Tip Rating:
  • Along the west cost you will find small cottages along the coast line. Most of the people here make a living from fishing.

Off The Beaten Path: Paternoster Seafood
  • Tip Rating:
  • I can't actually remember the name of the restaurant but since there is only one you can't miss it. The food is so cheap anyone can easily afford to eat lobster like a king (about R125). The prawns and calamari are excellent. The restaurant is very basic with a nice verandah so you can sit outside. Service is slow (approx 45 mins) but there are notices on the walls so you are forewarned.

  • There is is a fairly new housing development an hour up the west coast. You have to be a resident to enter the walled village but you can ask the guards to let you in to have a look. We took a walk along the beach to the lighthouse and were very lucky to see about 3 whales in the bay approx 100m offshore. This is quite uncommon in January so we were very lucky.

Off The Beaten Path: Shelley Point Penguin
  • Tip Rating:
  • We were so busy watching the whales in the bay that we didn't even notice some seals basking on the rocks in front of us. There was also a penguin on the rocks even closer. We could walk right up to it. Please remember to respect the wildlife and keep your distance.
