I first went to Munich as an exchange student when I was 17. It was only for 6 weeks but it was a great experience. I was there in December so I got to see snow (lots of it!) for the first time in my life. It was the first time I was away from home for such a long time and it was a great experience for me to have so much independence. We stayed in Wolfratshausen which is south of Munich but the train went directly into the city.
The family I stayed with was brilliant and there was also an Australian student about the same age as I was also staying with them so he and I would explore the city together. I discovered art and got a real appreciation for it while I was there, I loved wandering around the Haus de Kunst and I got to see the nutcracker at a beautiful Baroque theatre.

I had my first white Christmas which was lovely even though it was strange being with another family. I loved all the German Christmas tradition. On Christmas eve we went to Church for midnight mass and even though I did not understand a word it was special. We had a real Christmas tree and real candles on the tree and real gingerbread men hanging from the branches.
The family took us to Austria over New Year to go skiing, my first time, and I loved it although I was battered and bruised by the time we got back.

I went back to Munich with my husband in 2002 and it was nice to see everything again but this time in summer. We also managed to find the house of the people I stayed with.

Munich is one of my favorite towns. I see that you like the city as well. Nice pages. I recently visited Namibia, near YOUR homeland. Very friendly folks down in southern Africa.
