Buckingham Palace: Buckingham Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The palace was built in 1703, for the Duke of Buckingham. Queen Victoria declared that this castle should be the Royal residence. After the fire at Windsor castle the Queen has opened up parts of Buckingham palace to the public (in summer) in order to raise funds. As you may notice the flag in my pic is at half mast, this was in the week following th death of Princess Diana. Under normal circumstances when you see the flag flying you know that the Queen is home so look out for twitching curtains!

    Trafalgar Square: Trafalgar Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • Trafalgar square is an excellent meeting point for weary tourists. The square
commemorates the victory of Nelson near Trafalgar. There are many
consulates in the area and the square has been popular as a place for demonstrations. Nelson's column is in the centre of the square surrounded by 4 lions and fountains. Other buildings close by are the National gallery, Canada House, South Africa House and St Martin in the Fields Church. There are often free classical music recitals in the church so you can just pop in for a break
    from the busy streets.

    Trafalgar Square: Trafalgar Square (2)
  • Tip Rating:
  • As far as I know the council has stopped the sale of bird seed in the square as the pigeons were getting out of hand but like anywhere in London
you will still see these 'flying rats' as they are fondly known!

Things To Do: Changing of the Guards
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Changing of the guards is done at around 11am most days. It starts at Horse guards parade and moves down to Buckingham Palace. The best thing to do is to get yourself a spot in front of the palace by the Victoria memorial for the best views.

    Things To Do: Horse Guards
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Horse Guards are halfway up Whitehall on the same side as 10 Downing Street. The barracks are the headquarters of the Household Division, whose main duty is to protect the Queen. The Entrance is guarded by two sentries of the cavalry. The changing of the guard begins here daily - the Horse Guard Parade. The trooping of the colour takes place in the large square at the back in June every year on the Queen's official birthday.
