The colosseum was much bigger than I had expected and extremely interesting. It is amazing to see something so old still standing. The colosseum was built in 72 AD and inaugurated by Titus eight years later in a 100-day ceremony. At first it was supposed to be a horse racing circuit, but became site for bloody gladiator contests. The place had a capacity of 55,000 seats.

The floor does not exist so you can see the animal cages that are underneath. I believe that they have constructed a walkway over the floor now so you can get a closer look.

The Trevi fountain is probably the most beautiful anywhere. The water is bright blue against the stark white marble is stunning. It is in a fairly small square so it can get very crowded, legend has it that if you throw a coin into the pond will return to Rome. The statue represents Neptune with two Tritons at his side.

The steps are a great meeting place and a chance to rest your weary feet. Unfortunately you can’t eat or drink or you will be told off! There are some expensive designer shops at the base.

Santa Maria in Aracoeli, built on the site of the ancient Roman capital, precisely where the ruins of a temple to Juno Moneta are. The temple was transformed into a church dedicated to the Madonna for a pagan goddess. According to legend, the Emperor Augustus had a vision of the Virgin standing on an altar in a dazzling light and holding the baby Jesus in her arms. He heard a voice which said: ‘This is the altar of the Son of God’. The Emperor had an altar built on the site, the Ara Coeli (altar of the heavens). Be prepared there are a lot of stairs to the church! .
