Campanile and its Views: Campanile
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • You can climb to the top of the tower to get some lovely views of the city and Piazza San Marco.

    Palazzo Ducale: The Doge's Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Doge's Palace has acted as a palace, a political center, a museum, and a prison since the 12th century. The most impressive highlight is the Sala del Maggiore Consiglio (Great Council Hall), by Tintoretto. It is the largest room in Europe not supported by interior columns and also contains the largest oil painting in the world, Tintoretto's Paradise.

    Gondolas: Gondola
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is fairly expensive so we did not do it but I suppose when in Venice………I personally find it a bit tacky and not very romantic (especially when you have tourists photographing you for their must have gondola picture). I do think they are very beautiful and a symbol of Venice.

    Canal Grande: Grand Canal
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is Venice’s major waterway, the Grand Canal bisects the whole city. It Runs from the railway station to San Marco, and snakes it way through the city. It is almost 4kms long and 5 metres deep with the average width being 50 metres. Gondolas and every kind of boat imaginable travel the canal, making it a very busy waterway. The banks are lined with medieval palaces and churches as well as rundown houses and apartments.

San Marco and Piazza: Piazza San Marco
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a great place to sit on the stairs and relax for a while. It is surrounded by shops, restaurants and cafes (very pricey). It is best experienced at night where there are orchestras playing classical music, I think this is only in summer. You don’t need to sit at an expensive café to enjoy it, grab a drink from around the corner and sit on the stairs.

    Bridges: Rialto Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • The bridge was built between 1588 and 1591, as a permanent replacement for the boat bridge and three wooden bridges that had crossed the Grand Canal. The Rialto Bridge's has a 24-foot arch and is built on 12,000 wooden pilings that still support the bridge today.
There are some small shops on the bridge selling touristy stuff. Be aware that the cafes along the Grand Canal near the bridge are very expensive and the food very boring.

    Bridges: Bridge of Sighs
  • Tip Rating:
  • The name 'Bridge of Sighs' was invented in the 19th Century by Lord Byron. He popularized the belief that the bridge's name was inspired by the sighs of condemned prisoners as they were led through it to the executioner. The bridge is lovely at night when it is lit up against the dark canal.

Campos, Calles and Canals: Get yourself lost
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best way to discover Venice is to just walk and forget about any kind of direction and see what happens. Pull out the map at the end of the day to find your way home or jump on a water bus back to San Marco – we used this as our base as we knew how to get from here to our hotel.

Venice photographs beautifully. Our camera was stolen, so I really appreciate your pics. Thanks for helping me to remember.

Great Venice Page! I think I have an almost identical photo of the Grand Canal ; )

Very nice Venice pages with beautiful pics. I was there last month but only for a day. I had a gondola ride and enjoyed it, and as I was with a tour, it only cost me USD 16 and was well worth it. Hope to go back for a proper visit soon.
