A gem in the Western Cape Montague is a true gem and the area around it is definitely worth visiting. It is a highlight of the Western Cape and can easily be incorporated into a trip up the garden route. My suggestion would be to drive early on a Wednesday or Saturday in order to get to Protea farm for the tractor ride at 10am (R318 off the N1 highway). See my tips for details on this. After the tractor ride and lunch, head into town via scenic Burgers Pass. Have a quick look around and then head out on the R62 towards Barrydale through Tradouw pass to Swellendam and spend your first night here. It is a long day with a lot to see. If you have time overnight in Montague as well but you can push it into a day if you need to.

Sarah, your restaurant tip was so descriptive that it made my mouth water! Montagu seems a lovely place to visit, and I especially enjoyed your description of the trailer ride tour. Thanks for a delightful insight into a place I know nothing about. |
