The cathedral was built by the French late in the 19th century. The twin towered neo-Romanesque facade faces a small square which still has a large statue of the Virgin Mary. You'll note that all the windows of the cathedral, including the rose window, are plain glass. The stained glass was a casualty of World War II and has never been replaced.

This is an enormous, lively and bustling market where you can get just about anything you could think of. It was constructed in 1914 by the French, the clock remains permanently fixed at half past one.

This is the best way to get around the city. It will cost you a dollar an hour plus tip. The drivers generally don’t speak English but they have a list of the major sights in English, French and Vietnamese so you just point and you’re on your way. Traffic can be pretty scary and there are no rules but the great thing is that you are able to see things as you are peddled along and still experience the sounds and smells.

The War Remnants Museum was established in September 1975, it was previously known as the American War crimes museum but the name was changed to be more ‘politically correct’. Some of the displays, especially the pictures are very graphic which I am actually pleased about because there should be no window dressing for war. It was good to see the Vietnamese side to the war. Hollywood bombards us with its version of the war. I agree that the war was terrible for the American soldiers but it was even worse for the Vietnamese. Displays illustrate the killing of civilians, the spreading of agent orange, the torturing of prisoners and the effects of the war in the north. Planes, tanks, bombs and helicopters are also on display.

The embassy was attacked during the 1968 Tet Offensive and is famous for the evacuation in 1975 when helicopters landed on the roof to get the last Americans out.

The embassy was being demolished when we were there and I am not sure what will be put in its place. There is a Plaque outside which will probably stay as a monument. We bought the ‘before’ pictures from a lady on the street who told us a few interesting stories - whether she actually witnessed the evacuation or not I can’t be sure.

You find these informal barbers on the pavements. What shocked me was the ear cleaning. The ‘cleaner’ has a miners type lamp on his head so he can see into the ear and he uses a long stick with cotton wool on the end to clean inside. No thanks, good old ear buds for me.

Well worth taking time out from the busy streets of Saigon to see more of Vietnam. The organised tours are very cheap (about $5) You start off at Can Tho where you get on a small boat and go down the river to a floating market and you meander through various tributaries. The scenery is fantastic and the people are very friendly.

Food is one of the reasons i will go back to Vietnam in 2 weeks time. |
