I have been to St.John's briefly and I have traversed the island of Newfoundland but this page is mainly about my time in Goose Bay Labrador. I spent 3 years there from '95 to '98. VT does not have a Labrador site availiable at this time so I have had to place it here under St.John's Newfoundland. While under the same governmental control, Newfoundland and Labrador are 2 distinct places. Sure many former Newfoundlanders live in Labrador and there are many similar attitudes and habits, before long one can see a difference. Sunday Supper however is still a big deal and a time for family and friends to get together.
There are approxiamately 6000 inhabitants of the town and surrounding area year round. That number can swell to around 10,000 with the influx of ground crews and flight crews from Nato countries such as England, Netherlands and Germany. The primary role of the air base is to provide resources and a suitable low level flight training area during the flying season, which lasts from approx. May to Sept. The air base was developed during WW2 and had both a Canadian and American side. The Americans maintained a presence at the base until 1971. The Canadian Dept of National Defence took over the American side officially at that time and sold off its original buildings. As you can imagine there have been many people passing through Goose Bay. Either for training, stationed there or just to stop in and get gas before going to Europe or returning.
