Bratislava - pearl of Slovakia

by PetraG - last update: May 16, 2007

Bratislava is the capital of the Slovak Republic, a new State, fruit of the division of the former Czechoslovak Republic. Since then, Bratislava has been the business, cultural and political center of this nation in the center of Europe. The city of Bratislava is located on the foothills of the Little Carpathians, on the South-West of Slovakia, close to the border with Hungary and Austria.
After some decades of a communism regime, the Slovak Republic is catching up quickly with the rest of Europe. It will take some years to be as developed as the other countries in the West. Till then, you have the opportunity to visit this country and find really great prices. Since Slovakia is part of the EU now, I am sure prices will rise to western standards in the near future.

Historic town

History:
From its beginnings and throughout its historical development it has ranked among the most prominent cities of Central Europe. It has played an important role in the spheres of economic, politic, administrative, cultural, national, and social transformations and in decisive historical events.
Although
Language:
Czech and Slovak are very similar, they are two different languages. Most of the young people speak English, and some of the older ones speak German. It is always a wise idea to learn some words in Slovak, for instance:
Hello = Dobry den
Yes/no = Ano/Nie
Please = Prosim
I don’t understand = Nerozumiem
How much is it? = Coto Stoji?

Street life and arts

It's fascinating how much life you can find in the streets of the city. There are, shops, restaurants and pubs everywhere... Some artists used the streetlife to public their arts. You can find very nice sculptures in the city center, like the Napoleon on this picture...
