Read an article in Sunset magazine about beach places and decided to visit Newport and stay at the Sylvia Beach Hotel. The hotel is a refurbished Victorian house that fell into disrepair. Each room is named after an author or literary character and decorated according to the period/theme. We stayed in the Herman Melville room and the Scott Fitzgerald room. Both were great but Melville looks out over the ocean and I fell asleep listening to the sounds of the waves on the beach. There are no televisions or telephones (one payphone downstairs). There are reading areas and a library overlooking the ocean. Journals are strewn around the hotel for would be writers to capture their thoughts if they please. It is not necessary to go out to dinner as a fine and very reasonably priced dinner is available downstairs. Wholesome and with vegetarian choices. Wine can be bought at the little wine shop a few paces away. So far this was our favorite place to stay and we hope to go back some day soon. |
