Among its claims , Kerala provided the world with the first elected Communist government in 1957. The signs of this are painted all over bridges and buildings throughout Kerala. Partially as a result of this political legacy, and also Keralans long interest in education,health and the arts, Kerala has a more egalitarian society than other parts of India. The land is fertile and signs of extreme poverty appear more rarely. Street marches by students are popular, all dressed up in their best, marching proudly behind the school band. Unfortunately all this political activity has held back Kerala's development and its people are active participants in guest worker programs in the emirates. |
