Douglas is a small town of 15,000 on the US/Mexican border in the high desert of SE Arizona. Winters are mild, summers can be blazing hot May through June until the monsoon rains break the heat in early July. It has the benefits of a place where you get to know your neighbors and still has some of the old west attributes of independance and self reliance. This is a place where neighbors still help neighbors, swap garden produce and lend each other tools and machinery. It is the kind of place where you walk into a store and are greeted by name, or sit down in your favorite resturant and the wait staff brings your "usual" with out having to ask what it is, where you can write a check without being asked for identification. The pace of life is a little slower but we have all the "conveniences" of modern American life: Safeway, Ace Hardware, Denny"s, Pizza Hut, KFC, McDonald"s, Wal-Mart, etc. The economy is also slow, Douglas is a service center for this part of the county (Cochise) and a major part of our business comes across the border from the ajacent town of Agua Prieta, Mexico a town of approx 100,000 which was the scene of one of the battles of the Mexican Revolution between Pancho Villa and Federal troops. This is the area of the Old West which has been home to some of the real legendary charactors of history: Geronimo, Cochise, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, (Tombstone is only 50 miles up the road) and John Slaughter to name but a few.
Still doing business in town is the historic Gadsden Hotel, once considered the finest accomidation between San Franscisco and St. Louis.
- Pros:Quiet, peaceful, friendly
- Cons:Slow economy, July temperatures
- In a nutshell:Douglas is a fine place to live!
While it is not exactly what one thinks of as a "trap" the main dining room of the Gadsden Hotel is a sad disapointment... more travel advice
