As I have told you, you can find papyrus on every corner, but here is where you get the quality. There are all different sizes and themes painted on them. From ancient Egyptian history to modern themes. You can even have your name incrypted in kartusha on a papyrus here.
What to pay:
The prices are from 40 LE and up. It is way more expencive than on the street, but it is the quality that you really pay for. In this perticular shop, we tried to bargain, but without success.
Alabaster is something that Egypt is famous for and it is the cheapest in Luxor. Plus there is a great offer of different objects. There are two sorts of alabaster figures: handcrafted and industrial production. Of course, there is a huge difference in price.
In front of Khan El-Khalili
This is a bazaar in Cairo. There isn't a thing you can't find in here: cotton, a souvenir, gold, silver, make up (I recommand "kohel", a black powder women use for eyes, but not as an eye shadow, but as an eye-liner a "kajal"), papyrus, clothes... As people in my country would say "From a needle to a locomotion". You must be very careful, because not everything that shines is gold or silver!
What to buy:
In Gyza, people will offer you all sorts of souvenires like pyramids, sphinx etc. but I recomand you to buy it in Khan El-Khalili. It is more interesting, and it can be much cheaper.
What to pay: BARGAIN!!!!
There, in the bedouine village, was a litlle “shop” selling all different sorts of things. There you could find interesting rocks, herbs and things that we’ve been told are made by the village inhabitants out off what the nature has to give them. So there, we found a “necklace” with a heart shaped pendant of pure “natural plastic” all with "MAde in China" lable…
What to buy: In this particular shop, I went for a meteor rock or something like that.
Souvenirs can be found on every step in Egypt. Hurghada is no different. There are several shops with famous egyptian cotton, papyrus, alabaster, silver, spices etc. But once you step out of Hurghada’s touristic centre and enter those places where tourists rarely (or never) visit, you get to see what is it that this country has to offer. It is not recommandable to go there on your own in the evening, especially if it’s “all women group” .
What to buy:
You can find other things very cheap in Hurghada, and some things should be left for Cairo. But my experiance tells that when you find something you like, buy it immediatelly, because you might not find it anywhere else.
What to pay:
Price is something you take relativly! There is a must do in Egypt, and it is connected to shopping, and that is BARGAIN. In 99,9% shops you must bargain. You might come to a 10th part of the initial price, and don't worry! You are not destroying their business, no matter what they say!
