Papyrus - Cairo

Papyrus

Papyrus

If you come to Egypt and don't buy a papyrus it's just as if you have not seen the Pyramids. You can get it in almost every store you enter, on the street... There is a big difference between those bought on the street and in qualified stores. In most shops you are going to buy a nice print. On the street, you can only get cheap and lousy prints. Still, you can find some better than the other. They are usually chasing you with them offering you 1-2 for 10LE. Don't forget to bargain! After bargaining, I got 10 for 10LE (1 EUR= 7 LE ). Those are nice souvenirs and people like it. Some say that it is not the actual papyrus, but false made of banana leaves. My Egyptian friends have assured me that it's not possible to make it out of banana leaves because those are too hard and thick for such thing. It would be breaking. However, if you want to be sure you would have to visit a papyrus "factory" as they call it. In those factories, that are actually just shops where you can see papyrus plant and all the "machines" that were necessary for production, papyrus is very expencive. For example, a small one (10cm x 7cm) framed, is about 50 LE. I suggest that you do try to bargain, but in the one we visited there was no bargaining.

Kerdasaa: What ever you want Khan el Khalili Review

This is a village called KERDASAA . It's about 13 km's away from the pyramids. You can find some very cheap cotton of fantastic quality. Souvenires, silver, everything in just one place.

It's cheaper than Khan El-Khalili! But don't forget to bargain. Be prepared to pay the price for tourists, but if you do your job good, it's still going to be cheaper than back home.

What to buy:
Kerdasaa is also known as Cotton Village. Cotton is very cheap there and you can find more than nice things there. I have bought two beautiful galabea blouses there for about 25 LE each ( 1 EUR = 7 LE ) and if that is not cheap I don't know what is? I know that if I could find something like that at home, I would probably have to pay about 25 EUR for it... There are also some silver and leather items there and traditional souvenires to be found in Kerdasaa, but trust me, cotton is the best choice there.

Khan El-Khallili - Cairo

Khan El-Khallili

Khan el Khalili: Khan El-Khalili Khan el Khalili Review

Yes, this is the famous Khan El-Khalili! Well, in front of it anyway... We had very little time there. In fact, no matter how much time you have there it's not enough. You can buy so manny things very cheap. Many of them are hand craft, but more are not. Still, they will all insure you that it is true Egyptian hand made and that you are getting something authentic for a very resonable price. The truth is that they have different prices for tourists, and different for Egyptians. No matter how cheap you get what you want, if you were local it would be 30-50% less. So, don't forget to bargain!

What to buy:
This is a place where you can find everything: "from a needle to a locomotion", as we have a saying in Serbia... The most popular are perfumes, cotton, silver, papyrus and traditional souvenires like mini Pyramids, Sphinx etc.
