Santiago de Compostela is famous for the important medieval pilgrimage route, the "Way of St. James", which ends in the capital of Galicia.
Santiago has a population of about 93.000, and my impresion is that the city is not very big, but even as a small city or "pueblo" Santiago has a lot of atmosphere to offer of, and especially the old part of the town, around the cathedral.
The construcion of the cathedral began in 1075, and according to legend, it was the apostle Saint James the Great that brought the Message of Christ to the Celts in the Iberian Peninsula. In 44 AD he was beheaded in Jerusalem, and his remains were later brought back to Galicia.
We - my boyfriend and I - spended a week in Galicia having our hotel in Santiago and taking daytrips with our car out of the city. We visited the coast, Fisterra, among others, and we also went to Estrado on wednesday to have "pulpo a feira" - a common (and may I add very good) typical dish from Galicia.
Please see my page on Galicia for more information about this trip.
