"LA TERRA FERMA" a Lleida Travel Page by Peret

The city of Lleida is The capital of the lands called "Terra ferma". This is "Steady Land" in catalan. Or also "Terra de ponent", because is the part of Catalonia placed most in the east. It is also my birth land. And i have family there.
Usually was a peasant land, famous for its fruits. And still it is, but now, the town council have also taken care to old atractives, and have built news.
The city is two hours far from Barcelona, by highway or train, so you can do a day trip. Come to see see the catalonia that is not in the coast. Its history starts with the iberians and continue with romans, people from Cartago, arabian, juish, christians. Now live hier catalans, and a lot of people who came of Africa for economical reasons.
La ciutat de Lleida és la capital de l'anomenada terra ferma, o també de "les terres de ponent", ja que és la part més occidental de Catalunya. També és la meva terra de naixement, i encara hi tinc família.
Tradicionalment ha estat una terra de pagesos, gaudint de fama per la bona qualitat de la seva fruita. Avui, però, gràcies a la cura que s'ha tingut dels seus monuments més clàssics i a les noves reformes de la ciutat, ha esdevingut un lloc on poder gaudir d'una visita. Històricament hi han passat per aquí íbers, romans, cartaginesos, àrabs, jueus, cristians...ara hi viuen catalans i una bona colla d'africans que han vingut a guanyar-se les garrofes.
