Pompeii, Herculaneum Herculaneum Review

Both are great. Herculaneaum is smaller but better conserved and you really get the feeling of everyday life at the moment of the devastating eruption in AD79.
A discount ticket is available from the ticket booths if you intend visiting them both.
Easy access by Circumvesuviana trains.

The Amalfi coast Amalfi Review

The Amalfi coast including Positano and Amalfi is known world-wide for the sheer beauty of the scenery. Ravello is only a half an hour’s bus ride away from Amalfi and I believe is also worth the visit. The best way to see this area is by bus. Don’t bother to drive yourself, the roads really need 100% concentration from the driver and you’ll inevitably miss most of the scenery.

Naples Naples Review

Naples is easy to get to, plenty to see there.
There’s a small tourist office in the Piazza Garibaldi train station – that’s the best place to get off the train from Sorrento.. You can get a free map of the town there but they don’t give them away easily. Ask for specific directions to a couple of places like a) the airport and b) the archaeological museum and they will have to mark them on the map and probably give it to you. If you just ask for a town map they’ll give you one of the historical centre only and it’s not much good.

Directions: Direct train from Sorrento. About an hour's journey. Get off at the second to last stop - Piazza Garibaldi.

Capri Capri Review

And of course Capri . . . well, Capri has such a reputation thanks to Axel Munthe , Gracie Fields and others that you might just want to go there. If you don’t I’m not sure that you’ll miss much that the Amalfi coast can’t give you - except the boat trip

Try to stop off at the old funicula/cable-car station at alt. 780 metres "Terazzo del Paradiso". 75-plus years old Andrea De Gregorio and his daughter run a little souvenir shop there. They are the most charming people and will give you a potted history of the volcano in English, French, Italian and I suspect any other language you can think of. Buy your souvenirs and snacks there. It won't cost you more than elsewhere and you'll get a personal touch that you won't find elsewhere.
