We spent a week there. It was long enough to be able to see and do everything at a leisurely (Mediterranean?) pace. We wanted especially to go to Pompeii and Herculaneum, see the Amalfi coast, climb Vesuvius, visit Naples and apart from that just take in the general atmosphere and appreciate the scenery. Sorrento was a great base for doing just that. We were there second week in March 2005 and there were no hoards of tourists. We'd not like to go there in high season, the locals tell us that the roads get completely saturated, especially in August. Sorrento is not a place to go to if you just want to stay put and lay on the beach (there are no beaches worth talking about) - so you need to be able to move around without spending your time in traffic jams.
Sorrento must be one of the places to have featured in the earliest of tourist guide books and now there are loads of them giving you all the info on monuments etc. that you will ever need. So I've based these travel tips simply on what we did, liked and disliked plus some practical tips on transport.
