Lodwar, Turkanan Center of Commerce

I visited Lodwar for a few days in the fall of 1988 with a group of students in the School for International Training. We visited Lake Turkana and learned about the Turkanan people during our short visit to this arid little town.
Lodwar was one of my favorite places in Kenya. It was too dry for many bugs up here. Also, a few of us slept one night up on the hill behind the polytechnic school. We saw heat lightening in the distance and shooting stars while we listened to Turkanans singing traditional songs below the hill.

Memories of Lodwar

I remember the desperate hunger of some Turkanan children, the limericks of the Somali-Kenyan restaurant keeper, the loving friendship of Joseph, the nephew of our host, and the mysterious Namoratunga stones we saw on the drive out to Lake Turkana. Sir Geoffrey Howe visited Lodwar during our visit and I met him very briefly (said "hello" and shook his hand). I keep a warm spot in my heart for the Turkanan people.

Nice to read about Lodwar, a place, where family of one of my fellow-travellers live.
