SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

by Phalaenopsis03 - last update: Nov 28, 2006

ME THINKS I'M IN LOVE with SAN DIEGO!

Balboa Park
Man, I'm just enamored by this city. Talk about the quintessential California town. San Diego (S.D.) is definitely one of them. Albeit much different in style and flavor from it's northern Cali neighbors (Los Angeles Co. and Orange Co.), and yet, San Diego is a coastal community full of fun and adventure with a multitude of offerings for everyone. I'm by no means implying that it's the perfect city, because it does have its shortcomings, but S.D. is just awesome and I enjoy every visit.
Dinner @ Jen's in Hillcrest, San Diego
S.D. is 100 miles south of where I currently reside and it takes me approximately one hour and 20 minutes to get there without traffic and two plus hours with traffic (specifically within a five mile radius of the Birmingham exit off the 5 fwy). With friends living there, I try to come back as often as possible. Shoot, just in one and a half months alone, I drove down four times. One time was to celebrate Mardi Gras at the Gaslamp with friends, and another, to watch the second round of the NCAA tourney match (UCLA vs. Alabama) at the Cox Arena by myself.

In undergrad, my girlfriends and I would head south for the border to party in TJ (Tijuana, MX) via San Diego. Occasionally, the ex and I would also make the bay city a weekend getaway destination, but my, how things have considerably changed since then. I can remember when the Gaslamp use to be dead and now it's this bustling entertainment / nightlife mecca boasting of tons of restaurants and clubs. Historic Old Town's being transformed as well. I've also heard that the San Diego Zoo has undergone some changes too. And then there's the two year old Petco Stadium that's a big buzz. I'm sure there's more, but that's just what I'm aware of, but hooray for growth and development!

Since I'm not a San Diego local, my pages won't be comprehensive like others. However, I'll post recommendations of places that I think would be helpful and that you'll hopefully enjoy. For a more thorough look at S.D., please visit the pages of fellow VT'ers and local San Diegans, lmkluque and spartan

NOTE (in navigating my SD site)
All my tips under the Things To Do section are arranged alphabetically beginning with Balboa Park. My tips are a culmination of road trips I've taken throughout the years, but more recently since Feb. '06, when my good friend Jen moved to Hillcrest. My pages are still definitely incomplete, but I'm continuously working on them and updating.

On San Diego:
The sixth largest city in America and home of the biggest military establishment in the world, San Diego has much to offer its locals and visitors alike. Blessed with near perfect weather year round, there's plenty of stuff to do in this bustling southern California community. Take your pick: enjoy the Pacific coastline, camp in one of the state parks, take the kiddies to the zoo, explore Balboa Park, eat at the Gaslamp Quarter, and the list goes on and on. It's really great here!
