I arrived in Santorini with one specific mission in mind - to find the picturesque place from where blue domed churches adorned seaside cliffs. I had already seen a ton of ruins to last a me a lifetime and enough bodies of water to satisfy my aquatic tastes (or lack thereof). Now it was time for me to bear witness to what I had only read about in travel books, watched on television (E! Network in America), and seen on postcards (and boy, there sure are plenty of the latter). Here in Santorini, I was determined to create my own picture perfect postcards - postcards that would grace my virtual photo album and provide me with beautiful memories to reminisce about for years.
Now here's some facts I learned about Santorini, but please don't hold me accountable for any misleading information I may be giving you. Refer to more knowledgeable VT'ers on this, there's a lot of them.
Santorini is more commonly referred to as Thira by the Greeks/locals. Thira's capital is also called Thira, although I noticed it used interchangeably with Fira (anybody know which is correct, Thira or Fira?). Anyway, the Island of Thira is actually a caldera which is a volcanic crater that exploded a long time ago, thus causing its center to collapse. Now, ferries and boats sail into this flooded crater to reach its ports. Located on the southern side of the island is the well-preserved Minoan civilization of Akrotiri. And lastly, beside its scenic views, Thira is also said to produce great wines (on its eastern half). Well, I hope that helped even a little bit.
