The main entrance to the medieval city walls of Stari Grad is the Pile Gate located on the western wall. The Pile gate actually consists of two gates, an outside gate (which you see) and an inside gate (which you don't see). And to get inside these walls, you can only be a pedestrian as motorists aren't allowed access.

The perfect start to your Dubrovnik orientation would be to walk the medieval city walls. P.G. and I almost passed this opportunity up were it not for my insistence on purchasing the audio tour (you know, the little walkie-talkie looking thing that spews out recorded messages). And anyway, the closet-sized office where you could buy the audio tour was located just a few steps before the actual "box office" so we couldn't miss it. The cost per person, for the audio doohickey thingy majigy was 30 Kuna and the entrance ticket, 15 Kuna. At that time it was about 6.6 Kuna to one US Dollar and so it ended up costing us ~ $6.80 each. But if you don't care much for a historical narration then just go ahead and skip it, but definitely still go on the walk. You're guaranteed spectacular views of Old Town and the surrounding areas, trust me. If I remember correctly, it took us about an hour or two to walk the entire perimeter, but that includes all the breaks we took for taking photos and just admiring the scenery.

Directions: Upon entering Pile Gate's second gate, it's on the left side of Stradun/Placa.

Still at the beginning of our walk and we got an amazing view of this fortress, called Fort Lovrijenac. It is located just outside the walls and stands atop a steep cliff. It was originally designed for defense against enemies approaching from the west. But now I hear it's used for popular stage plays performed during the summer time.

Because of Dubrovnik's geographical location and climate, you'll find plenty of lush greenery.
