A SERENDIPITOUS FIND

Prior to my arrival to Dubrovnik I hadn't even heard of this Adriatic jewel (Americans haven't got a clue). However, I was pleasantly surprised once I entered it's famous Pile Gate (main entrance) and walked along the city walls. Just visualize this (or look at the above picture), I was atop a 1,000 year old medieval town; it felt like a step back into time. And what stood before me was this gorgeous sea of orange'ish tiled roofs, lush greenery, and azure waters. Truly a breathtaking site. I was immediately gripped with an overwhelming sensation of awe and wonder. It was a serendipitous visit that I was fortunate to have experienced. Truly unforgettable.

The following, taken from http://www.hinet.hr/port-of-dubrovnik/dubrovnik/city/history.htm

After proclaiming the independence of the Republic of Croatia and the Serbian agression at Croatia, Dubrovnik was attacked in October 1991 by severe power of Serbs and Montenegrins who intended to burn and destroy the whole territory completely. Dubrovnik region was occupied and devastated and the City itself was in the total enemy's encirclement for eight months, bombed many times and brutally destroyed particularly on the 6th of December 1991.

Today the cultural and historic heritage of Dubrovnik which was barbarously damaged in the war, has been mostly restored. Reconstructed hotels, valuable facilities of Dubrovnik Summer Festival as well as the other cultural events are essential elements for the development of modern tourism.
