CRUISING PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY ***Infinitely Under Construction!
Throughout the years I was with the ex, we had taken numerous roadtrips together (on both coasts). And with the usual itinerary, ours included a coastal drive of the Golden State, hitting several cities along the way. However, there were parts of seaside Cali that still eluded me. Consequently, on another one of my whims, on January 9, 2004, I rented a car and went on a solo drive up Highway 1 (PCH). This little trip of mine served a dual purpose - to fill in the gaps left incomplete from my previous excursions and to simply go it alone.
The drive on the windy roads of the coastal mountains were slightly challenging, but not for the reasons you might think. I'm fast behind the wheel, so the 20mph turns weren't fun - my friends will tell ya, I'm a speed demon (and the cops will agree). But the breathtaking panoramic views, the fresh scent of ocean air, and just being in a pristine environment; at one with nature, was all worth it. It was an 800 mile/11 hour drive I would gladly do over again. |
|  | So, with my car rental all gassed up, my CD's in the glove compartment, my trusty maps riding shot gun, and my digi cam batteries all juiced up, I hit the road. More specifically, I hit these freeways: 105W, 405N, 101N and then the 1N. I decided to bypass the 1 entrance in San Juan Capistrano for lack of time. Instead, I took it a little past the town of Gaviota which is approx. two hours northwest of Los Angeles.
On this excursion, I stopped in Lompoc, Vandenberg Village (home of Vandenberg Air Force Base), Grover Beach/Pismo Beach, San Simeon, and Big Sur. I spent one night in Morro Bay. However, the photos and tips presented in my California pages are a culmination of roadtrips taken throughout the years around both the coastal region and inland areas of the Golden State. |
