Getting TO/AROUND: Flying in from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar, we were taken (by a friend) to a Changlun travel agent where we book a taxi to Hatyai... At the same time, we also book our hotel accommodation in Hatyai... at the Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel... We were then transfer to the Thai taxi stand at the Duty Free Complex... and off we go, passing the Sadao immigration check-point... It is about 60km to Hatyai on a good seal road and depending on traffic condition, the road journey will take about 45 to 60 mins... The Sadao immigration (although it is at the border town of Danok) is opened from 6.00am to 12.00midnight... You will need to pay MYR1.00 or BHT10 as administration fee when you have your passport cleared at this check-point... Please give exact amount and no changes will be given if you are generous enough to give notes of bigger denomination... The journey is un-eventful as we passed thru the countryside and occasional small towns on the way... There are also industrial estates and we were told that some of the investors are from Malaysia...

Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: The Hatyai International Airport with a completely terminal is about 9km from the city centre... There are only a few flights a day to/from the airport... Only Thai International Airways and other budget airlines flies this route... Tiger Airways from Singapore, Nok Air, Thai Air Asia and Thai Oriental Airlines from Bangkok... the Malaysian Air Asia has temporary suspensed it flights from Kuala Lumpur due to low demand... Passenger coming in from Malaysia normally flies to the nearest airport at Alor Setar and then go to Hatyai by taxi... For international flights, do not forget to save 500 baht for the airport departure tax..

Getting TO/AROUND: The Hatyai Railway Station is right in the centre of the city... It can be said that the rapid growth of Hatyai over Songkhla is because of the siting of the railway interchange in Hatyai... and hence the station is known as Hatyai Junction... The train is still a popular mode of cheap transport in Thailand... The train goes northward to Bangkok from Hatyai passing thru Surat Thani, Chumporn and Hua Hin... There are 2 separate lines going to the south, with one line going to Malaysia thru Padang Besar and the other line going to Sungai Golok thru Yala on the east coast... The Bangkok International Express goes from Butterworth (in Malaysia) to Bangkok passing thru Hatyai...

Tuk-Tuks: Tuk Tuk

Getting TO/AROUND: Tuk-tuks is a cheap public transport for short distance around the city... It can be flagged off the road... but most station themselves in front of hotels, train station and bus terminals... It is an essential part of Thai lifestyle where such transport is used to go to the market, to the temple, to the city centre for shopping or just anywhere within the city where it is too far (and too hot) to walk... Be warned that unless you speak Thai or is Thai, the fare will probably be higher... However, the minimum fare has gone up to 20 baht with the numerous increase in petrol price a last few months...
