the sqm stall outside wet market...
SQM is a tidbit and is made from flour, egg, magarine, salt and sugar as ingredients... it is popular as a dessert at the end of a meal or just as a tidbit with coffee or tea... SQM is very popular in Ipoh, Kampar and Bidor (all towns in the state of Perak)... But the best so far that I have tasted is sold at this stall in Bentong...
What to buy: Besides the SQM which is home made, the stall also sells kaya, kind of coconut and egg jam...
What to pay: The packet of 450gm of Sha Qi Ma is currently (December 2008) at RM3.20...
Address: 37 Kg Kemansur, 28700 Bentong...
Directions: The SQM is sold at a stall by the side of the wet market...

This confectionery factory is set in a village house in Kg Kemansur... It is home-made by hand and is noted throughout Bentong... The pasties are sold directly by the bakery thru Mrs Mok, a middle aged woman, at the back entrance of the Bentong market, along Jalan Chui Yin... She will usually be stationed there after 8.00am in the morning until sold out... Besides the puffs, the woman also sell packaged groundnuts and a snack called "sek ki mah" aka "sha qi ma" which is also famous in Bentong... The "sek ki mah" or "sha qi ma" is made in Bentong itself...
What to buy: The speciality is kaya puff and pineapple puff... The pastry is just right and the puffs are good to every bite... As no perservatives are used in making the pastry, its expiry date is within 2 weeks...
What to pay: The cost of the puff is currently 70 sen each as in December 2008...
Address: 5 Jalan Aman, Kg Kemansur, 28700 Bentong
Directions: Kg Kemansur is just across the river from the road leading from the Bentong market... It is on the right side of the road, the village on the left side of the road being Kg Perting...

the shop facade...
The shop is the second shophouse on the main Jalan Ah Peng which runs thru Bentong town on its way to Raub... You can see some of the buns and pastries displayed inside the shop...
The shop is opened daily from about 8.30am to 7.00pm... Baking is not done on Saturdays...
What to buy: The shop bakes its own buns and breads thru the years... According to Mr Khor, the present owner, the family has been operating the bakery for the last 60 years... The buns comes with fillings including tau-sar, kaya, peanuts and coconut... There is also the smooth textured white bread, a traditional Hainanese offering... There are also the small plain buns and chocolated flavoured buns which are equally popular...
What to pay: The buns start from 60 sen each with the bread loaves from RM2.00...

The wet market is the place to meet local people and buy local products besides the normal vegetable, fruits, meat and other daily neccesities... The market stalls spilled out onto the main and side roads around the market... It is buisest in the morning from 5.00am...
What to buy: The wet market sells the everyday needs of the populance... There are vegetables, fruits, fish, meat and others... Bentong is noted for its ginger.. and tofu pok... Its suace under the "Hand" brand is also well sought after... And I was also introduced to the pineapple puff by my Bentong friend, who swears that you cannot get it anywhere but in Bentong... The puff was indeed very good...
What to pay: Prices are generally reasonable if not cheap... t is really cheap if compared to that in nearby Bukit Tinggi village or Kuala Lumpur..
Address: Jalan Chui Yin, Bentong
Directions: The market is on the main road and will not be missed...
